Are entertaining costs an allowable BUSINESS expense?

Networking socially and picking up the bill for outings and hospitality with clients, may seem like an obvious marketing expense, especially when you consider how effective it can be in keeping you connected and profitable. However in the UK HMRC’s rules don’t allow tax relief on client hospitality. Unfortunately it’s not an allowable expense and you cannot claim these costs back or any VAT payable on hospitality. That said, the rules are different if you’re entertaining staff. You can claim costs for entertaining staff and workforce on an annual basis, up to a maximum of £150 per head. You can also claim back VAT on expenses of this nature - this could relate to venue costs, catering, entertainment and even overnight accommodation. There are caveats to this and since we are not accountants, we can’t provide official guidance in this area. Instead we strongly recommend that you speak to your own tax advisor or accountant, before you commit to an event that you’re hoping to claim as an allowable expense.
